Above the weir, the water is approximately 2.5 metres deep and there is a good stretch of water to swim along but no further exit places. There is a very small grass area by the entry point which can get busy on a hot day. The water is straight off Dartmoor: the water is clear with a brown tint from the peat.
Below the wear the river is tidal and there are two accessible shingle beaches at high tide. Footwear recommended because of the large concrete lumps on the river bed.
Almost everyone swims above the weir.
